I forgot to mention, the other food item that kept me going that first night of strep throat symptoms; splitting head-ache, and 101+ fever was honey glazed sesame sticks. These are one of my tried and true, Recipe$ $ $urvival staples.

I finally unraveled myself from my bed sheets, fluffy blanket and down filled duvet sometime around noon. With my sore throat no longer ravaging but my head splitting I wanted to get some food in me so I could take some ibuprofen. I recently bought this gorgeous 4.5 # bag of Kagayaki Japanese rice. It cooks up quickly and takes equal amounts of water to rice. I sautéed cubed tofu and & onions. I was going to but a scrambled egg in but a friend reminded me that mixing starch and protein can throw the food balance off elevating acid that can lead to mucus building up. I left the scrambled egg out.

I finished Gael Green’s Insatiable and immediately dove into Angels & Demons with the intention that I’ll finish that before the movie opens in 5 days from now.

As I write this, two days later, I see now that I was still really out of it. I was feeling sorry for myself Saturday night as I listened to throngs of young couples getting it on, partying, dogs barking at each other, it certainly sounded like so many were having a grand ol time. I was under the covers, sweating, shaking, coughing like crazy w/a splitting headache.

Sunday I was feeling a bit better. Not such a splitting headache. I was dressed in quite the crazy rig, pajama leggings, jumper dress, thermal shirt, yellow and white Cambodian scarf, 60’s Armani yellow-framed sunglasses, strap-up motorcycle boots, and my Mackie jacket. The motivator to get me out of the house besides the streak of blue I spied over the dormitory building across the way was my need for a black ink cartridge. I trucked up to the Staples on B’way & 8th St to get one, for the tune of nearly $25. On my way back I dropped into the little card/stationary store at the top of my street and sure enough, they had the cartridge for $5. less. I did the whole walk all over again to return the Staples cartridge.

I tried to read outside in the community garden next to my building but just as I had gotten there the sun went in and the wind picked up. I nestled myself into my big chair for a read of Angels & Demons which lead to my falling asleep. I woke, pivoted and crawled into bed.

I watched 60 mins. and had a glass of really cold pear nectar – for dinner I guess.

What better way to finally bite the bullet and start web logging then from my sick bed and sharing what I’ve done to recover?

But first some background; I began producing Recipe$ 4 $urvival, Utilitarian Cooking and Much More… Prompted by my retaliating nature to the exploding popularity of theFood Network and the burgeoning of chefs who cooked w/ingredients few had heard of, never mind afford. The episode that outraged me so was an episode that had the celebrity chef making forced meat, stuffing that into a skinned pheasant and cooking that in port wine for over three hours.

Recipe$ 4 $urvival maintained an unprecedented prime time schedule on the public access, Manhattan Neighbor Network for over two years catapulting me into cult classic fame and stature.

So here I be, umpteen years later, being told daily -”D, you of all people have got to have blog”. I should, inspired by Natalie Goldberg’s Writing Down the Bones, I wrote constantly the first year of R4$, documenting my ‘Recipes 4 Survival, simple recipes for life and living in addition to SpecialD* dishes.

Writing & cooking got me to pull back the curtains and get off my futon BUT, “I CAN’T STAND THE WORD ‘BLOGGING’ and how navel gazing it’s all become. Friends persisted. Please find my first web log:

Thursday I had a lovely lunch of frisse and fried artichoke salad topped with shaved parmesan, and an individual brick oven pizza Margherita with the woman I work with, herein after referred to as H. An hour and a half later while writing up a punch list of needs for a condo sublet, I turned to H and said, “Man, I’m not feeling so great.” I finished the punch list, we closed up shop around 5:30P. I walked east with her, made it hOMe to find an invite for the Housing Works benefit… I was going nowhere. The weather has been just horrible, not so horrible, more like bleak with an unprecedented amount of rain. I paid bills and made a fava bean, sunchoke, olive oil and lemon – salad/dish. Friday is my day to do all I have to do…

Feeling sluggish I did not go to yoga. It was noon when I confirmed where my important meeting of the day would be. It was 1PM when I threw myself out the door en route to do my W. 47th St. shuffle. More about this project later.

My meeting with a marketing expert in fashion and the web was at the Coffee Shop in Union Square. I knew there was something wrong with me when I couldn’t believe people were smiling and eating and I couldn’t think of eating any thing except maybe a lemonade.

Beth Israel amulatory loomed across the street as my cough became more persistant, fever was raising and my energy dropping. After a quickie consult w/a nurse practitioner I was off to DOCs on W. 23rd.

Diagnosed with strep throat and NOT swine flu I filled my RX and couldn’t get hOMe fast enough. Fortunately my apt was neat. Always a nice thing and a big ingredient in living “Recipes 4 Survival”. It was nearly midnight when I woke with a splitting headache and growling stomach. A banana is about all I could imagine getting down. I threw on a beach cover up/mumu kinda long tunic thing and topsiders and wobbled to the N. Korean, mother load of a grocery store at the top of the street.

Here’s what I’m surviving on: Apple bananas – those mini ones. Because I’m feeling sorry for myself I splurged on already cut up pineapple and something called cool-cups – sorta like a jello but no geletin. Anyway, the black cherry looked good to me. ENOUGH. Let’s see if I can post this now.
